Low Clearance Solutions

I have been trying out various low clearance avoidance tools after witnessing a horrible accident and having a close call myself. Obviously I look out for the signs ahead, but not all bridges are posted and it's no good for planning a route anyway.

So what are the options?


Rand McNally Motor Carrier Road Atlas

Pros - Much more than a low clearance list, with an abundance of useful information.

Cons - Limited to just over 1000 low clearances. Can't use while driving. Costs around $50.

POI-Factory.com low clearance POI database for GPS

Pros - Free to download. Accurate. Ready to install.

Cons - Limited data, not much more than 300 entries.

DiscoveryOwners.com low clearance POI database for GPS

Pros - Free to download. Accurate.

Cons - Limited data, approximately 400 entries. Many duplicates across several databases. Only available in text format.

LowClearances.com low clearance POI database for GPS

Pros - Huge database, up to 10 times larger than the others available. Accurate. Regularly updated. Ready to install.

Cons - Costs $20 for annual subscription.

There are also a few fully integrated GPS systems available, but these are very expensive and I cannot vouch for their accuracy or the number of low clearances in their databases.

My wife will like this, she has pictures of me in the Clipper trying to sneek thru a covered bridge out east a couple of years ago. They always lie on the height sign a little bit, but this one had a 10" iron pipe (looked like plastic) hung from chains at the other end, I got in but could not get out going forward I told her I would lay on the roof and push the pipe up if she would drive---We backed up

Hi there, Ya know about 7 or 8 years ago the wife and I were on a road going to Iowa and we got caught in a situation just like that!!
"But" we could not back up due to traffic...... WE WERE TRAPED!!!!
The MORON'S behind us could see that we couldn't go any where and still kept honking horns...... I had to get out and ask the guys behind us to go around.. and as soon as he did another took his place....I finally had the wife get out stand behind the rig with a Flaer as she was standing there a Nebraska state trooper showed up and directed traffic so we could get backed up 1/4 mile to the turn off. That was about two hours and 150.bucks
" the citation the nice trooper gave me" Plus a " Wellcome to Nebraska" have a nice day"  Don't think I will go back there!!!
