heater vents in floor

Our '76 Clipper (rear kitchen, couch) has only one heater vent in the closet by the door. I have since seen another Clipper where there are additional vents in front of the main closet and by the dinette up front. Our Clipper (purchased this August) has new carpet, and has spent most of its life in southern California. So, I wonder if the vents have simply been covered up because they were not needed, and if I can just cut them open again. Unfortunately, I can't get a hold of the previous owner, Walt Easely #2889 at this time. I appreciate any help.
