Condition of wood around battery box

Hello, we removed the bench seats and noticed what initially looked like water damage to the interior paneling and seat frame, we noticed a strong acid smell. Does anyone know the best way to address the issue of battery acid on wood? Can we use a baking soda solution? See attached pictures.

I would try it lightly to test for acid and see if you get the foaming reaction. Might just be rain water damage. Check the top and sides outside and see if you think the battery box to sidewall seal is tight. If you can smell the battery acid inside then I would check and see if the battery is in poor condition and/or the converter is overcharging/boiling the electrolyte. Is the inside of the battery box ate up from acid on the inside?

There is a strong smell of electrolyte inside the box but there doesn't appear to be any damage; only under the seat.
