Looking for Clipper and have questions

We are looking to purchase a 21' clipper. It will be used for towing at times. We'd like some general information on the different versions.
1) what is the difference in the towing ability with the Dodge 440 vs the Chevrolet 400 engines.
2) What is the difference in the mileage with the different engines.
3) There are references to strengthening the frame. Is this something that should be checked for in purchasing a used unit. Is it a sagging problem or what?
4) Someplace there was a note that the newer model years were better built. what is the differences in construction.
Any other general comments that would help us select the right unit.

member #126- If there is a difference in the towing power ,the larger 440 would be the more powerful.I doubt if there is any significant diffrerence in the miliage,7 to 9 m.p.g.is about as good as it gets.The rear frame extensions put on the Dodge chassis Clippers.[Chevs ??],are to light and weak to do any more than hold up the back of the coach body.You can only safely tow light weight items such as a motor cycle ,or light utility trailer with out doing damage.anything larger and/or heavier will do damage. It will cause the frame extension to sag down ,producing wrinkles in the side panel fibre glass.     Fortunately you have the advantage of all the back news letters with the news letter index. and this web sight to guide you.Any thing that can happen to a clipper HAS, And Is covered in one or both of these places. Thanks for the clarification. Now to find the right Clipper. (It seems like the Chev might be a little preferable due to brakes and it's probably easier to find engine parts but it doesn't sound like there is much difference otherwise)

It was a 24 footer, air, generator, awning, 63K miles. Went for $4745 before I got there. We did find a 78 Dodge 21 and now to get it fixed up. appreciate the input from all.

It was listed as in very good shape. I just checked the recently completed items and there were two others that recently sold. The 24 footer information was no longer on the completed items.

If you are looking for Clipper or just want to see what yours may be worth, try www.tradeexpress.com and www.recycler.com (also available as free publications at gas stations, mini marts and auto parts stores). Don't forget that newspapers across the country have web sites where you can search their classified ads without paying for a subscription. Some have automatic search engines that will email you when key words for an item you are looking for come up. PS Lots of sellers don't have a clue that they are selling a motor home Classic. Prices tend to be very low right now, especially if the unit is not running. I would be embarassed to tell you what we paid for the Clipper we found in the Trade Express.
