We are having carb problems.  Our Clipper was smoking badly on startup.  Choke is fine.  So we bought a rebuilt Thermoquad, thinking this would help.  We were wrong, we're having the exact same problem.  Unit starts fine, just lots of smoke and heavy fuel smell.

We are stumped.  Anybody have any ideas?

I'm sure you've already checked the air filter or air inlet tube for restrictions.  Is the ignition system up to snuff?  When is the last time you gave the ol' girl a tune?

Tyler as the old saying goes if it looks like a duck it must be a duck it eather has to be the choke not set right or the heat rizer stuck closed Im betting it's still the choke make sure when it starts the choke will be closed then when it starts it will open about a querter of a inch then it should start opening by its self

A couple of questions about your REBUILT Thermo quad.Did you or a mechanic of your choosing install the carburator?    The good news is a properly operating and adjusted Thermo Quad is the best possable STOCK unit for your Clipper.Member #10

If your getting black smoke out the exhaust you are burning way too rich a fuel mixture. If you installed a new carb, you need to make sure it is adjusted properly by someone who knows their stuff. I have gone to a manual choke. That way it does what I want it to, when I want it to do it. The choke is easy to check. Pull off your air filter unit and after your engine is warmed up look inside the carb. The choke valve should be open in the vertical position rather than closed in the horizontal or even partly closed. It should be wide open after you are all warmed up. If ckoke looks good you need to have a Carb guy check the fuel/air mixture.  Ranger

bullock, didn't you say the choke was fine?  What is it doing and at what time?  We are curious to see what you have come up with

Thanks for all the advice.  Hubby hasn't got a chance to check all the tips out yet.  The carb we bought from our mechanic and my hubby installed it himself.  We couldn't rebuild our old one as the shafts were gone.  I'll let you know what happens.  Again, thanks alot.

Black smoke.
In REMANUFACTURING a Thermoquad,On a ball park 1k mile  plus carb, That's generally whats needed.Replacing the worn out shafts is practically a prerequsite for this job.    Along with more often than not a replacement phenolic carb body.    New floats, jets, and anything else that can wear out.It is a complicated but highly effective unit.Unfortunatley few people have the knowledge or parts availability to do them correctly. In passing I might add that stuck or sunken floats ,as well as sticking needles and seats could cause the problem you are having. Hello
I am having an electrical problem and need some help! I have no running lights, dash lights, or marker lights. I have head lights and brake lights though. I'm sure I have a short and a grounding problem somewhere but where do I begin? It blows the top left hand corner fuse in the fuse box every time I turn on the head lights. I've already replaced the light switch and that didn't fix it. Has anyone else experienced these same symptons with their Clipper? I would appreciate any advice or help anyone can give me.
                  Thank You,
                   Ron H.

Proud.....on the electrical issue, I would try and check out all the running/marker lights to see if any of them are burned out and/or really looking cruddy in where the bulbs insert. If you find one or more that are in bad shape with rusted wiring etc., replace it, clean it up, and try it again. Thats where I would begin.   Ranger.
