Air Intake Snorkel

Hello:
Has anyone come up with an idea to extend the Air Intake Snorkel beyond the heat of the motor? It just doesn't seem right that it is constantly sucking up hot air and the hotter the engine the hotter the air. Has to do something to your air fuel ratio or does it? I know that my Chevy PU has it's snorkel extended all the way to the grill. Like to hear your comments on this matter, whether or not it makes a difference on the performance, MPG, fuel ratio, etc or not.

                  Thanks,
                    Ron

i have modified the air intake snorkel on my 440 engine. the original snorkel size is so small you could not fit a golf ball into it.
a 440 needs a lot more air than that to be efficient, so i cut the snorkel off close to the air cleaner body and attached a piece of new holding tank dump hose with a clamp to the air cleaner body and routed the hose near the grille just above the radiator.
i have found this to help quite a bit in power and some noted mpg improvement. i also use a k&n air filter to replace the paper filter.
i am using the original thermoquad carb i have rebuilt, and get around 8.5 mpg currently.
i was getting about 7.5 mpg.

That sounds like a superb idea which I'm going to do today! Thanks for your input and advice. This has got to be the best forum around especially for us Clipper die hards. Hope I get the oportunity to meet a bunch of the die hards in february in Sacramento at Cal Expo.
                 Thanks Again,

To "Proud" in Sacto,

In an old ACOC news letter, there are plans to get cold air into the engine via a homemade Ram Air induction system through the sheet metal just under the windshield.  I have seen the same system on other vehicles and it works well.

However, I just this weekend inspected a 1982 Dodge van that matches my 79 Sportsman in just about every way. (Driver to front bumper that is!)

And guess what?  Dodge itself outfitted their rigs with cold ram air via a 3 inch flexable air hose similar to what you guys are talking about.

From the air cleaner Dodge ran the hose on the passenger side of the radiator, and then notched a hole through the radiator support bracket.  The hose was then connected to a plastic scoop that was fitted to the radiator support sheet metal.

You may what to check out the junk yards for the entire setup?!

Curious on what you found at the wreaking yards ??

I found this site in Mopar Action magazine that may help.  Check it out at www.ramairbox.com  I bet you could make something close to this for far less dough.
