Battery mystery

While checking the coach battery in the 1979 clipper I found an old battery cap (three caps in one piecec). In one of the caps was a hole drilled in it and a lead anode (about four inches long) like device hooked to a red wire that disappeared into the coach. Does anyone have any idea what this thing dose  and was it original to the coach in 1979 or has someone added this thing to later?

What you have found is a probe that the later model Clippers had that extended through one cap on the battery until it touched the electrolyte  solution. If the electrolyte got low enough that the probe was no longer in contact with the solution, a red LED indicator on the control panel would come on, indicating that it was time to refill the battery. If everything is working normally, you should have a constant red LED glowing on your control panel above the fridge, and if you put the probe back into any cell of the the battery until it touches the fluid, it should go out.

Lead and wire lead into battery cap- CONTRARE! Harold.
The lead core in the battery cap and the lead that runs from it to your control panel above the fridge. Does indeed let you know when your battery is low on water    ,BUT--The red light on the panel COMES ON when the battery water drops below the lead probe.Incidently.    Bob Chaney.
