Clipper Weight

The 1977 Brochure for the Clipper (as seen on this site) claims the dry weight out of the factory is 7210 pounds.

I have trouble believing this - and estimate that it is closer to 8000 pounds.

Can anyone confirm or refute this claim?

How much do your Clipper weigh?

My '75 360 (with a 9000lb GVR) comes in at 9200 lbs (2940-front, 6260-rear) - and that is totally wet (36 gals fuel, 40 gals water) and loaded with supplies and food and me.

Still, when I add my wife, 2 kids and 4 bikes, and a few more bits - I figure I'm pushing 10,000lbs - which has me a bit worried as I'm almost 1000lbs over the GVR.

Am I the only one driving around overloaded?

I have never had mine weighed.  Though now you have me curious. The truck scales are just across town, maybe I should go see, just for kicks.  But on the other hand, I figure if it's lasted 25 years without any problems, I'm not going to loose much sleep over it.  When they spec chassis for GVR, they are pretty conservative.

Could you let me know where you're going to get your rig weighed.
I used the "free" one up old San Jose road in Soquel - and I'm not too comfortable with its accuracy.
I'd be willing to pay a few bucks to get on an accurate truckers scale when I'm in fully loaded trip mode - to see just how badly overloaded I am.

By the way - this is another reason Clipper owners should drive conservatively - I'll wager most are quite overloaded.

Clipper weight. Most hiway truck scales, if not all, are ,[or used to be],left on. its no trouble rolling on to them getting your front axle weight, your gross weight ,then your rear axle weight.there are didgital read out scales in plain sight.- FOR ABSOLUTE POSITIVE-all large truck stops have scales, they will let you weigh give you a slip with all three of your weights and take your money the same as any truck Bob Chaney #2626.

yeah Bob.  Oregon is nice enough to leave the scales on.  Washington doesn't.

try this It will suprize you weigh each corner otherwise each wheel set I'll only tell you part of the right side sag...... right front is 400 lbs heaver than left

Weighed our '78 21' with all water tanks empty, 1/2 tank of fuel and 1/2 tank of propane.  With me inside(200 lb) it weighed 8550.

So that puts you at around 9,000lbs "wet". Add some tools, food and gear and you are right at what I'm at -  9,200 or so. Then add some kids, a wife, and four bikes - and now you know why I drive SLOW - because I'm pushing 10,000 pounds down the road!

Had to weigh our 21' 79 clipper before registering it. Waste tanks were empty and guess about 1/2 tank of fuel and some water in the fresh water tank and she weighed in around 8700 lb without anyone in it. Seems to be consistent with what others are finding.

Does anyone happen to know how much the original 4KW generator used in the Clipper's weighs. I was wondering how much of my 8700 lbs in the generator. Thanks.

 I just installed an Onan BFA 4KW into my 1978 Clipper and the book said that it weighed 232 lbs. I weighed the Clipper after installation with about a half tank of gas,1/4 tank of propane,a few tools, full fresh water tank, empty holding tanks, & me (185). The front wheels weighed 2900 and the rear axles weighed 6200. That's a total of 9100 lbs without my wife, food, clothing, a few more tools,and all the other little things we take with us, like books, TV, etc. By the time I'm ready to hit the road I'm sure I'll be over weight. This is the way they designed these Clippers and I love mine. I just take my time getting to where I'm going and drive with safety and awareness at all times.
