I have been working on my rig for 2-1/2 years and always thought I was working on a 1978 AMCLP. That is until I got to the front disc brakes. I ordered new disc brake calipers from an on line Co. and new brake hoses from a local brake Co. Turns out nothin fit! Man I was just a little p.o.ed. So I take the hoses back to the local guy and tell him they won't fit and they sure don't look like the ones I took off, He takes the hoses goes into his office comes back 15 min. later and tells me the old hoses are for a 1977 not a 78. I took the new 1977 hoses home tried to bolt them on the new calipers and its not looking good. Turns out the new 1978 calipers are not going to work with 1977 hoses. Now I'am really Pissed. Now I take the old caliper and compare the 2, very little difference, but just enough that there wrong! Damn!! So I went to local auto parts store and order calipers for a 1977 1 ton van. Bitchin they fit!! So I remembered the post on Vin #'s. I checked my vin # and was made in 1977, but pink say 1978 AMCLP. The 6th digit on the vin# indicates model year mine was a "7" Double Damn. There are a total of 13 letters & numbers, after the final 6th digit indicates building sequence, so mine was   039,692 sled made, all models begin with 0. So learn from a real hard head, check your vin # before ordering parts, cause they don't all fit the same.I wonder if DMV goes by year sold or by year made on pink slip?  Hank Way OUT!!

DMV GOES BY THE YEAR THE CLIPPERS WERE FIRST REGISTERED. PERCH BOUGHT CHASSIES IN LARGE QUANTIES.  MANY OF THE 77'S ARE 76'S. A EASY WAY TO TELL THE DIFFERENCE  IS THE KEY LOCATION - 76'S ARE IN DASH AND 77'S ARE ON THE COLUMN. I SAY A 76'S A FEW WEEKS AGO THAT HAD A 78 REGISTRATION.

Hi Bob, Yup"  mine is a 76 even though it is registard as a 77..

Here is a question for ya...  When do we get to stop  Smoging the rigs...??????
I just got my registration notice and it says that I have to smog it??
I am not worried because of the new motor..

The are not doing the "30 year rollover" (a plan that was proposed years ago that CARB repealed) - in fact the environmental wackos almost made it even more restrictive -  (were it not for Jay Leno, and many heavy-weight vintage American car buffs stepping in to stop that nonsense)....anyways.............. you have to have a 1975 or older vehicle (Clipper) to be smog exempt.

There are "work-arounds" (as I have noted before) - and I am not condoning them - and there are still six counties in the state that  have limited smog requirements (in certain area codes only)....you can figure out the rest.

All you need to know is here

I just crawled under the side and looked at the AC plate.  My 821F  with a 360 was made in 5/75.  The serial number is S 200.  Wonder how many was made in 1975.  Was that 200 in 1975 or 200 from the start of the ACs?
