Cruise control

On 1-26-02, John Beeson posted 3 questions on his '78 for carb, cruise control and gas tank problems. He got responses on the carb and tank, but nothing on the cruise control. I have the same problem on my '78. The unit tests out for power ok, but does not operate. The parts stores are not much help with a replacement unit. Any cruise control experts out there? My pedal foot needs a break.

Les if I read it right you have power to the actuator when you ingage the C.C if that's the case the actuator is bad how are you checking it ? driving and having someone have a meter on it or what? you have the brain box the sencers and vacume lines all can be problems check you foot brake and see if the vacume lines could have come off or are leakingI think these are all vacume this part is what shuts it off if you hit the brakes check the hose to the unit and see if the actuator moves when you put vacume  to it this will give you someplace to start anyway hope it helps

Speedometer shops are the usual places to get cruise controls worked on, but the ones in our Clippers are generally considered to be a lost cause. There's been quite a lot of discussion on these in back issues of the newsletters.

For whatever it's worth, I'll throw in my two cents on cruise controls.  I've had my clipper since 1985 and used a cruise control for one year. I drive by vaccuum gage (at least try to) and found that the cruise control was a great source for vacuum leaks and not a good way to maintain high vacuum readings when in use.  I removed it and have never missed it.

The stock cruise control is troublesome according to most I've heard from. Mine worked for about a year from when I bought the Clipper used and I noticed many new parts on it like it had just been repaired. Somebody had probably the best idea. Buy an aftermarket kit like a Dana and install it. Much less trouble. Dan L. ACOC # 2592
