We took our Clipper in to be smogged and were told the egr valve was disabled.  Does anyone know what that means?  Might it just be disconnected?  Can it be hooked up again or do we have to buy a new one? Where do I look to see if it's even there?

I don't know what engine you have.  On a Dodge 440, the egr valve is on the left side, top of the valve cover.  Yours may be disconnected or not working.  I posted a source in Phoenix for this some time ago.  You might check back issues.  Good luck! 8)

Things were worse than we could have imagined!  The vacuum amplifier had to be replaced to get the Egr valve working---then it was discovered that the new carb the mechanic put on when the engine was rebuilt is incompatible with the smog system and needs to be replaced with a "ported" carb.  It's going to cost over $2500 and they still won't know until they get that far if more needs to be done.    AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!  We're just trying to sell the thing so maybe we'll just drop the price really low and let someone else deal with it.  What a nightmare!

I think all carbs have ported vacuum ports on them. The hose going to the distributor is a ported vacuum. I would buy a plastic vacuum tee and a piece of rubber hose and hook it in line with the distributor and go try again. E.G.R.s are very simple, do a google and read up on how they work. If you pass, then put it all back untill next time. I do not live in a state that requires testing, does it just have to pass or does it have to be 100% stock?

I know this might not be much help, but $2500 even if you did have to swap the carb sounds EXTREMELY high.  Have you tried a second opinion/different mechanic?

now that is what I would do.

I can see my EGR moving if it moves with in 30 seconds you need to replace that what the books says, and I change my coil, oil and filters, now it cruise over 65 again, cause I could not get over 60, then it would act up like trying to quit but now so far I can go cruise 65 or 60.

Well things might be looking up.  Going through the mound of paperwork I have on this thing, I found a document from Edelbrock describing how to install the carb, especially the smog lines. Turns out it doesn't require a vacuum amplifier or throttle kicker at all.  The shop had hooked everything up incorrectly and were wrong about the carb being incompatible. They're going to try again today using the Edelbrock instructions.  If that works we'll see how much they try and charge us since it was over $450 to buy and install the unneeded vacuum amplifier.  Hopefully we won't have to get the BAR involved again.
