water pump question

I just returned from a trip to Arizona, Nevada,and Utah.The weather was very hot. The engine was running very hot, sometimes over 220 on level road.I installed a 160 degree thermostat. It has a four row radiator that is new. My question is, is there any way of knowing if I have the correct water pump without having to remove it?

I dont know if theres a way to tell the water pump but did you put the 1 1/2 opening thromosate in it if not theres part of the problem also beleave it or not if the thromo is to low a temp it dosent allow the water slow down enoff to be cooled same way if you take them out, if you haven't changed the water pump your self then I'd do just to be sure thats what I'm going to do good luck

Yes, I did install the 1 1/2" thermostat that I purchased from the ACOC.When I purchased the clipper the previous owner told me he had replaced the water pump and installed the larger radiator core on the advice of someone in the ACOC. He gave me all his back newsletters , and in them the items about the thermostat and radiator were highlighted. On my recent trip I decided to change the thermostat because it was running so hot. When I opened it up, it already had the correct one. I changed it anyway since I already had it apart. This is why I'm asking about how to tell if I already have the right one.I don't want to throw away a brand new pump if it's the correct one. Thanks for any help.

another thing to look into does it have a good tranny cooler, that will build up the heat also sence your tranny fluid goes in to the rad also

Maybe you were driving too fast??
If it's 108 degrees out and you're driving 65mph (or more), and you have your Clipper loaded a bit with gear, gas,  water, etc. - it would not surprise me if your running temp stays at 200 degrees (or a bit more) or so, even if all systems are working well.
However, running over 220 consistently probably indicates a problem somewhere.
