Title: Backpacking Supplies
Post by: bigray on August 18, 2005, 10:16:14 AM
Hello All,

I've been invited on a 3 day backpacking/hiking trip near in the Ozark Mountains during labor day weekend. Other than hiking during camping trips I've never done any serious backpacking.  I wanted some ideas/recommendations on equipment (including tent, backpack, sleeping bag, stove and water purification method/equipment).

Let me know!

Hey Bigray...sounds like you already know what stuff you need....remember pack light...rule of thumb is your pack shoudn't weigh more than 1/3 your weight....carry food stuff that doesnt have a lot of wrapping...take it in take it out...
rain gear...pack it on top...extra pair of foot wear....candle lanterns, econonical and effeftive...first aid, whistle, flash light.....dont know if you plan on cooking...thats a whole list by it self...not sure what the weather is were you are going, but dress for it, toiletries,sunscreen,sunglasses,binoculars....good luck :) ...have fun and enjoy....
Rasta
p.s. thanks for the good wishes on my maiden voyage.....

Cooler on wheels, fulla iced-down Lone Stars, with a humidor fulla Cubans....  oughtta round-out your gear pretty well.   :)

But even more important.... if that's possible.... a comfy pair of hiking boots, well broken in BEFORE the trip.

Along the lines of safety:

first aid kit, including 'mole skin' to protect the hotsposts you may get on your feet since you mention you haven't done much backpacking.  Back of the heel is where I usually need to protect.  Remember that you are carrying more weight than during a day hike.

foam sleeping pad, map, compass, light source, GORP (grossly overpriced raisins and peanut mix), lighter, fire starter, rain protection was mentioned.  I use a nylon poncho that can cover me and my pack.  It is also used as a tarp over my sleeping bag if rain is a possibilty.  One with eyelets in the corners is preferred.  Bring some nylon line, thin stuff.  It comes in handy.

Don't forget your blanky   :P
