Title: leaking waterline compression fitting.
Post by: TheMistyRidge on March 09, 2005, 09:11:21 AM
During our weekend use, our 1976, 21' rear kitchen Clipper developed a hot water line leak going to the kitchen sink. More specifically, it is leaking at the compression fitting on the incoming side of the T going to the sink. The rest of the hot water line continues on to the bathroom and is in tact.
It appear the compression fitting has separated apprx. 1/16" as compared to the other fittings.

Does anyone know of a tool that is available to re-compress those fittings or if that is even feasible. I could fab a tool but I don't want screw anything up before I get as much info as possible. I have already been told that because of the age of the coach I might as well tear the whole system out and start over with newer materials. I'm not into that kind of thing at this point and would only do that as a last resort.

Anybody out there with prior knowledge/experience on this matter?
Looking forward to hearing you.

My fittings parted with too much pressure.  I just removed what I could and cleaned it with a toothbrush sized wire brush.  The compression ring may be salvagable (spelling?).  If not, you can get one at a hardware store, better yet , get the entire fitting.  Three pieces I think.  Two wrenches that fit on each side of the fitting should be all you need.   Take the old parts with you to get the right size.

good luck.

DON'T WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT THE THE RINGS ON THESE TYPES OF HOSES. THEY WERE USED IN A LOT OF MOBIL HOMES, AND WHEN CORROSION SETS IN SEEING HOW THEY ARE ALLUMINUM THEY WILL GIVE WAY. TAKE A DREEL TOOL OR THREE CORNER FILE, REMOVE RING. REPLACE USING ORDINARY HOSE CLAMP YOU CAN GET FROM ANY PARTS HOUSE. JUST GET A GOOD ONE  NOT AN EL-CHEAPO FROM WALMART.  TEHY WILL STAY THERE FROM NOW ON.
