Title: Pending changes in CA smog checks
Post by: cat on April 25, 2004, 12:43:00 AM
I wish to alert all Calif. Clipper owners of vintage 1976 and above of pending changes in CA smog exemptions.  Currently, there is a 30 year limit.  In other words if you own a 1977 you will not be required to have a smog check when 2007 rolls around.  I read in the Stockton Record dated April 25,04 that a "new" law is being proposed by Assemblywoman Sally Lieber, D- Mt. View that would forever freeze 1975 as the latest model year that would not be required to have a biannual smog check.  This, in my opinion, is the worst possible news we could hear.  I have, so far, been unable to find the Senate Bill #.  If any of you members find it, please post it.  Please write your Assemblyperson and the Assembly Transportaion Committee to defeat this Bill.  The environmentalists are the ones pushing this Bill and it's got to be defeated or else we are going to be stuck with higher and higher costs of smogging our vehicles.  Bruce Douglass alias Tiger Cat

Actually, if you have a 1976, youi will not have to have a smog check when 2005 rolls in. I am now smog exempt with a 1975, and its 2004 - (remember, 1976 to 2006 is 31 years).

Anyways, let's hope Jay Leno comes to our rescue again.

Go here
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/bilinfo.html

and enter AB2683 in the "Search" field - and search.

you can read the proposed bill here

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/bill/asm/ab_2651-2700/ab_2683_bill_20040324_amended_asm.html

Unfortunately, this has passed the Assembly - 8 to 4 - and will now go to the legislature.

Sure am glad I have a 1975!
