The gas gauge on our '76 Clipper (Dodge 440) has quit. I assume (hope) it's the gauge, not the pick up. I imagine, I can find an instrument cluster at a junk yard, but I'm grateful for any suggestions. It's not a big deal, and if it's not worth it, I'll just go by milage.
Also, I'd like to purchase a good-quality bicycle rack for the FRONT. I have seen them before. Anyone know good brands? Quality is more important to me than price.

Before you start replacing things start with the easyest go under and check the wire to the sending unit they get lose and can come off it's right on the front of the tank could save you some bucks good luck
dieter-you can test the fuel guage by removing the wire that connects to the fuel sender and grounding it to a good clean area on the frame.
then turn the ignition to on, and see if the fuel guage goes to full.
if it does, your fuel sender is at fault.
if the guage does not move from empty,the guage or printed circuit board in the instrument cluster would be the likely problem.
do not leave the ignition on for more than about 5 seconds, as it can damage the guage.

Thank you for the advice (and for reminding me how to spell "guage"... (//images/smiles/icon_redface.gif) )
I've crawled under there and located the wiring; it's on the rear end of the tank. Everything is attached; it appears the sending wire has been replaced before, but it still looks very old. The grounding wire is original and very brittle. We have a few nice days coming up, so I'll drive the vehicle up on ramps as high as I can and do some rewiring.
