engine cuts out like it is fuel starved.this problem just started, when climing hills it misses an cuts out, can put it in a lower gear an it picks back up, but as soon as shifted into drive it`s the same story. Does this sound like a bad fuel pump or hopely a fuel filter? My clipper is a 1978-440cu-in, untill this problem, she has always ran great.
Ksman you have the right idea it does sound like fuel starvation I had the same problem about ten years ago and it was the filter, if you havent got one yet get a elec fuel pump mount it bye the tank with another filter between it and the tank itll also stop alot of the dreaded vapor lock (//images/smiles/icon_smile.gif)
We went with a permacool fuel filter (summit racing part # PRM-81794)that is somewhat oversize but given the age of the fuel tank and the chance for rust we decide too big was better than too small. It is about $32. The fact that it is also a water separator appealed to us.
Member-383, Cutting out. I concur with the other reply. Change your fuel filter (//images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif)

thank you all for the infomation, will put on a electric fuel pump an another fuel filter, thanks again, the ksman
Could be ignition. In lower gear at part throttle there is less pressure in the cylinders which means a lower voltage spark will be sufficient to jump the gap on a spark plug. My guess is a coil that is shorting out internally. Could be a crack on a distributor cap or rotor, or spark plug wires that are old with a break in the insulation.
