Title: New Clipper Owner Need HELP
Post by: OklaSurfChaser on March 27, 2011, 06:50:38 PM
We just purchased our 1st motor home a 1978 Dodge American Clipper.  We have had some problems.  We have some sort of "switch" that has gone bad it is light green in color and looks somewhat like a voltage regulator.  Part number H8D 437a 3874129
Can anyone help?  Not running well enough to chance getting it out of the yard :'( :'(

Thank you!

Where is this "switch" mounted?
Where do its wires come from, and where do they go to?

I found this on the web:
==============
part number 3874129H8D printed on case potted three terminal electrical timer/switch operates vacuum switch on carb which kicks throttle plate open.
==============

Not sure this means anything though

That would be the  " Delay Relay " to the electric choke. It keeps the choke from getting power for about 60 seconds when the key is turned. Had people turn on the ignition switch on but not start the cold motor while they messed around with the mirrors or something. Then when they tried to start the motor the choke was not on full. You can bypass it and have no problems if you start the motor correctly.

Thank you.  That will give us a place to start.  We were wondering if it could be bypassed. May check at a salvage yard.  It melted a lot of the wires running from it to the electric panel on the firewall driver side.  But shouldn't be too difficult to replace.

We hope to learn more about the generator etc from this site.  No books of any kind with the RV.

In my experience any chokes on Chrysler motors can be eliminated.  And, for anyone out there who cares, on old VW's too.  They cause more problems than they are worth.  What I did on my 225 slant six and 360 v-8 was rig a manual choke.  Typically what happens is that the chokes close when not needed, after warming up they close, and flood the manifold when you come out after being on the road for a while. If the temps are in the 40's plus when you first start up...you really don't need a choke....just pump the pedal a few times.

Just install a manual chocke... very easy...
