Post by: FREE BIRD on February 05, 2003, 08:16:00 AM
I just baught a new air conditioner. on the roof type. but now i need a cheap generator to power it when we go in the wild. any one have one for sale, or can recommend one that is under $700 and won't wake the neighbors.

If you got a "traditional"  RV type roof air unit (Coleman, etc.) then most likely you'll need a 4000 watt generator. You might be able to get away with say a Honda ModelEU3000is if you have a smaller AC Unit.
In any case, under $700? you're looking at a Generac  at best:

and it will awaken anybody within 75 yards, or more - I have heard one, and WAS considering it, until I heard it in person - LOUD.
I'm saving for a Honda 2000i - won't run the AC - but will run everything else, and recharge my 12 volt battery to boot.

Keep saving your money I have a koler in my Clipper and it sounds like a B-29 on a take off roll but it works the air so thats something I guess  (//images/smiles/icon_smile.gif)

Free Bird,
Do NOT try to take a portable generator, and, using exhaust modifications and other tricks (insulating it in a box, etc.) to try to create a "quiet" motorhome generator. My guess is you'll get yourself in trouble in a hurry.
Best bet is to live with the noise, or get a Honda portable generator, or really save and get an RV generator.
If you MUST have AC, your options are limited to a big portable (Generac 4000) or the Honda 3000 (maybe!), or if money is no object, run 2 Honda 2000i units in parallel, which is a popular alternative among some  fulltimers in trailers and 5th wheels.
