Title: Body shape
Post by: John Eversoll on October 09, 2009, 07:54:00 PM
Hey Jerry, got a question for you...

I have noticed a lot of cracks in the body of the fiberglass.

Is this something that I should be worried about.????? :o

Mine has a lot of spider cracks too.
I'm not really too worried about the cracks, but I'm guessing the cracks will need fixed when I get ready to paint.

Got that one right!!!! I am going to go with Hunter green to match my Chevell SS

or a Metallic grey... Heavy on the metallic.  Not real sure yet, still have to get the new motor in the rig. :)John

We fixed our stress cracks by Veeing them out and glassing them back up when we painted it. Nothing was deep, more of a gel coat blemish.

I've seen the same thing on my 1977 Clipper too.  V'ing them out?  You can take what I know about working with fiberglass, fill a thimble and still have plenty of room to wiggle your finger.  Can anyone advise me what I need to do?   I am taking mine over to a painter Thursday Morning and he's painting the cab portion only.  Going with the original cream color but without the stripes for now.  He's quoted me $900.00 but will also do all four wheels and side mirror brackets (severely rusted).  Followed by a nice clearcoate over everything.  I eventually plan on painting out the strips along the coach sides and back with the same original cream.  Hope to eventually do something a little different for the strips.. maybe even white on cream.

I sure will, John!  Dropped mine off this morning with a deposit to cover the materials, after taking some "before" pictures.

I got the Clipper back and am very pleased with the paint-job.  I'll download the pictures and post them here.
