Title: Max driving speed
Post by: Adrian on October 07, 2002, 12:07:00 PM
This is not a technical problem, rather more of a discussion point.
I was curious what speed other people drive at on the interstate. Our clipper with a 440 and bias ply tires seems to like 65 mph it will do 70 but it is really whining.

Also I saw yesterday a clipper driving from Santa Fe to Albuquerque. If that person is monitoring the list give me a call or email me. I'd love to talk Clippers.

Adrian #3323, Clipper Speed.
The first order of business would be to replace those bias ply tires with radials as soon as applicable, When worn out, or what ever suits your circumstance.  (//images/smiles/icon_smile.gif)  Happy Clippering Bob Chaney #2626

I  agree with Bob on all points here. In my opinion, driving a Clipper 65mph or more is at best, not very wise. Terrible gas mileage, significant strain on the drivetrain, and if you're unlucky and get a blow-out, or have to take evasive action, the situation has  a good probability of turning ugly.
At 55mph, it is an entirely different situation with the odds much more in your favor on all fronts.

Bob & Horst are absolutely correct in their remarks regarding speed, especially Bob's comment on driving the posted speed limit.  Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one obeying the speed limit.  I drag a VW, painted Clipper colors and the speed limit in California is 55 m.p.h. for trucks and towed vehicles.  When I drive 55 m.p.h. I can enjoy the landscape.  May take a little longer to get there but, so what!

Adrian,  I may have been the Clipper you saw between Santa Fe and Albuquerque.  Send me an e-mail and I'll tell you all about my 4000 mile  trip in the home after rebuilding it for the last 2 years.
