Title: Love New Paint Job
Post by: pilotdiana on July 13, 2007, 11:56:37 AM
I have owned a 1978 bunk style Clipper with the name of RDNKNIT (Red necking it) for one year and one month now.  I have been doing my best to restore her to her American Clipper glory and loving every minute I spend on her.  I just got it back fromt the paint shop on 6/30/07.  I was real nervous about changing the colors from the original, but I am now at ease since it looks so good.  She was in such poor condition and that's why we named her red necking it (we're from Texas).  My daughter bought her for you won't believe $1,500.  But now she looks like a California girl all the way.  See what you think.  There's more work to be done but she looks good pulling up to any campground now!

Wow.. looking good.

Mine had decent paing for a 25 year old Clipper, but that wasn't saying much.  I had a guy that owned a body shop was going to paint it in exchange for some website work but he never made up his mind on what he wanted and well.. it never got a fresh coat of paint.  Looks great!

I live in Huntington Beach, California.  The home of the Beach Boys!  My daughter bought the rig in Norco, California (horse country).  The original owner died and his son used it for a while; then it sat for a long time.  It was pretty smelly when I got it from my daughter.  Now it's all spankin brand new inside and a joy to be in.  I have lots to do yet.  I had all the appliances checked out and they all work beatifully!  Unbelievable, a 30 year old refrigeration that freezes the ice cream.

Wellllllll, the total was $1950.  It started off that it was only going to cost me $800 to do the cab without strips.  Then, I decided to do the strips there and down the sides so the price went up to $1500.   I also got the wheels, hitch, and step painted and had the roof sealed.  I then added polishing out the fiberglass to help it blend with the new paint job and that added another $450.  It took 5 weeks to complete all the work; I visited often to watch the entire process.  It was back and forth in the paint booth several times.  They understood my feelings about loving this old rig and wanted to be a real part of the restoration.  These guys are meticulous, see their website rvpaint.com

I have numerous cracks in the fiberglass and they told me if I did not get those repaired they would continue to grow as I motored down the road on my trips.  So there's a plan for next year's budget to fix all the fiberglass and repaint the house.

That looks fantastic!  I like the color scheme for sure!  We are looking for a Bunkhouse for sale, and would really like to know more about what they look like inside...in particular, the bunks!  Could you shoot more pix our way of the beds folded and unfolded?  I know...picky picky!

Thanks!  ~Sam

Hello,
I just have to say that I came across these photos and must comment.   I love the work done on your rig.  I am new to this site so am still looking through old posts.  I am also trying to restore my own Clipper.  It is nice to see a job well done to inspire newbies to the Clipper World.

That paint job looks great! Do you know what type of sealant they used on the roof? I am considering sealing my roof and am curious about what others have done.
