Power steering pulley swap issues

Hi gang,

I'm in the middle of trying to swap on a Ford dual groove power steering pulley.

I found a used pump and pully from an 80s Ford F350 at Pick n Pull and grabbed it.  I will attach a photo of the pulley number if that will help anybody else once I shrink the file.

Once I got the pulley off the Ford pump and my pulley off the Dodge pump I figured out that the inner diameters were off by about 1 mm.  But a local machine shop solved that problem.

Once I got the Ford pulley back on the Dodge pump I ran into problem number 2.

It looks like the original single Power Steering belt was running on the outside most groove on the water pump / fan pulleys.  So the second groove on the power steering pump is hanging out 1/2" in front of the other pulleys.

I was expecting to have to shim the pump 1 or 2 mm, but I can't see a way to shim it 1/2" without losing the rear mount, and introducing a bunch of play and instability into the system.

I'm totally perplexed, in all the previous posts I have seen about this mod I never read about this.

So I have a couple questions:

1.  Does anybody have a photo of a dual pulley system mounted on their Clipper?

2.  Does anybody know if the power steering brackets changed over the years?

Any other ideas on how to make this work?  For now I'm just going to run a single belt until I can solve this.  But even with multiple adjustments I still get PS belt squeal under load, or when cold, or just at random times.  It's annoying and I'm afraid I'm going to lose a belt so I'd like to fix this.

Thanks!
Ian

Joe,

Do you know if you have a 440-1 or 440-3 engine?

I did some research last night.  I found this thread along the way and according to my spark plugs I have the 440-1 engine.

This thread shows different belt routings for the 440-1 vs 440-3.

I'm not sure if only Motorhomes got the 440-3, or if some class C RVs did as well.

I will take a photo and post it.  Unfortunately I haven't had any luck finding info on PS mounting brackets and if they changed over the years.

The PS pump looks original, but it might have been replaced.  Who knows.

My best guess is that the brackets changed between 77 and 79.  In 79 they might have been using up whatever they had.

I'm trying to find 70s parts books to compare part numbers.
