Removing inside ceiling

I need too replace some wood around one of the vents. What's the best way to remove the inside ceiling with out damaging it.

What I did was went to home depot and got a sheet of 1/8 in lamanent really nice grain and cut a peice about six inches bigger that the area that was bad and beveled the edges then drilled and counter sunk holes then glued it to the ceiling and screwed in on really turned out nice then painted the whole ceiling bright white :D
