Off season is excellent.  Just spent 5 nights - 6 days camping there.  It's basically a parking lot on the beach with RV sized spaces.  Backed into a space and was able to set up canopy and fire pit up behind the RV.  Some spaces allow setting up beside the RV.  Fishing in the harbor and surf fishing is available, and there are fish to catch!  If you have a handicap placard or plates, it's free, if not, it's a whopping $15.00 a day.  But this is dry camping, no hookups.  There is a convenient dump station nearby and close to public bathrooms and outdoor cold water showers (for the brave).  We had a great time, met some nice people and I even caught some fish!

Hi Jim!
How was the surf??
Back in the 80s thru early 90s I competed the World Body Surfing Championships held in Oceanside every year - and back in those days there used to be RV park just north of the pier - that's where I would stay for the competition - but I heard it was torn down years ago? This place had hook-ups, showers, etc.
I wonder if its the same place?

Did you mean fishing was $15/day, or camping was $15/day??
Thanks
Horst

The surf was great!  They still have competitions in Oceanside, some of the best surf on the west coast.  The RV Park just north of the pier was torn down and million dollar condo's built there (sigh...).  At the West end of the harbor are large parking areas set up for RV's.  These are pay lots, but in Oceanside if you have handicap placards or plates, you park free.  Parking is $5.00 during the day and additional $10 if you stay overnight, so $15/day.  You have to have a California Fishing License, but that's the only time you pay for fishing in the harbor, or Ocean for that matter.  Fishing success varies, just like anywhere else and you're competing with all the water craft and kids throwing rocks in the water.  So a laid back attitude is required!! :-)
